    Rolled Hem?

I have been trying in vain to find a site that shows how to make a rolled hem. So far I have had no luck. I found one site that showed pics of a step by step process... But the problem I have with the pics is that in one pics is that in one step they advise you to make a crease using an iron ( I realize that you wouldnt do that with nylon), two steps later they show a pic (that appears to me) to be cutting the material & lopping off that crease... then in a step or two later, it says to fold the material to the crease. It maybe my eyes/bad pics but what appears in the pictures doesnt make sense with what is written.

I just dont want to sew anything incorrectly.

A rolled hem is just folded over twice and sewn. What you are describing sounds more complicated, do mean a flat felled seam? Can you post the link to the pics you are talking about?

Seems unnecessarily complicated with the trimming. A rolled hem is just the edge folded over twice. I used to iron some creases to make it easier (low setting) but now I just fold it twice and pin it. Good luck with your project (watcha makin?)

Thanks Red! I am going to (try to) make a couple of stuffsacks, followed by a hammock. Have never sewn a stitch, so its bound to be an adventure. I will probably end up with my hand sewn into some 1.1, & a drawcord that dangles uselessly from a poorly formed buttonhole.

That's what I started with too (stuff sack and hammock). I actually thought the hammock was easier, just bigger. Good luck to you (and your fingers)!

    BTW, here's a link to a no-buttonhole way of making a stuff sack I found easier: http://www.mindspring.com/~jine/sack.jpg

    Hi
Don't worry about the ironing part and pretty much follow on from step 5 and you should be ok.

However, for your first couple of times I do recommend that you pin the length first. Assume you want a 1/2 inch hem:
    1) fold over 1/2 inch (use a ruler till you get the eye for it),
    2) put a pin through both fabrics perpendicular to the hem (point towards the fabric, head exposed to air), do this for the length,
    3) pull the points of three pins to the cut edge of the fabric,
    4) fold these few inches over,
    5) pull out one pin at a time and reposition, perpendicular to the hem, repeat for the length,
    6) sew, keeping one or the other side as close to the edge of the foot as you can.

After the first line of sewing, a second stitch line is a breeze.

I usually do it like Griz says just folding over twice, BUT if you want it o look really nice, I for one have to do one of two extra steps. If it is a tarp or something that will be stretched to show all the gathered places and mistakes, I Iron the hem once folding it then Iron it again folding a second time, OR I sew the first fold then fold and sew the second fold, THEN you have to go back and sew the hem again right next to the edge of the last fold if you want that double stitched look.
It may be wrong but I have to do one or the other. Mule
Predictions are risky, especially when it comes to the future.
