Now the Q: Would a simple "skeleton" sewn from light web or grosgrain with no fabric at all work? I feel a test project coming on this weekend.......

Someone tried this a month or two ago. The thread is hiding around here somewhere (probably hiding with the caving strap sewing thread)
I'm thinking that they were amsteel and worked fairly well.
