Weight tolerance of the webbing loop?

Hey all first post (I am really more of a lurker!)

After finding this site while researching good kayak camping shelters I bought a Blackbird 1.7 double about 6 weeks ago. I've played with it in the yard a few times but was looking for a cheap indoor option to play with pads etc (until I can scrape up the cash for an underquilt). This past weekend I screwed a couple of heavy eyebolts into the studs of either end of my garage and last night did my first extended "hang" to see if I've learned anything. I just put the webbing through the eyebolt and clipped the carrabiener to it like it was a real skinny tree. This seemed to be working fine but about an hour or so in I got paranoid and got up to tie a couple of knots so the loop in the webbing wasn't taking the brunt of my weight (I am 6'3" & 235). About 1:30 the wind was pounding on my garage door so loud that I decided to break it down and head in but it took quite an effort to undo those knots after they had bared my weight for a few hours. Was I being overly concerned about the strength of the webbing stitching on it's own?

I weigh 275 to 290 and use a 1.7 double and have not had any issues with the webbing (I use mine with those magical Dutch Clips). I have had 2 4x4's I was hanging from break while I was hanging.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

Are you counting on the loops to take most of the weight? It just seems to me that by wrapping around a tree (or something) your taking a lot of pressure of the loop. I am basically just using the beiner as a t with the webbing up through the eyebolt. This thing has really surprised me far I seems like it's built like a light tank!

I know it seems strange, but if it's done right, sewing is the strongest way form a loop in a piece of webbing. It is much stronger than a knot. A knot will reduce the strength of a piece of rope or webbing by a certain percentage--depending on the knot used.

Man, we are about the same size and let me tell you, youve got nothing to worry about. I hand stitched boxed X's, with coats&clark poly thread, for my first treestraps. i used some tubular nylon and have hung my hammock SUPER tight on them without issue.

Ive since learned the error of my ways but these straps were by no means professional(spelled:UGLY). I now use just regular harbor freight poly cargo straps now, exceptionally lighter and less stretch. easy decision for $3
    ...in it for pics.
