The short answer is yes. You would need a wide enough pad so that your shoulders don't get cold. The coldest I've been with just a pad underneath and a 40F top quilt(TQ) was only 35F and I was toasty warm. With a pad under quilt and a TQ, rated to about 10F, I've gone as cold as -1F. Other hangers on this forum have gone MUCH colder with their gear.

Did a 20 degree F night once with just a 1/2" blue pad from butt to shoulders and a down sleeping bag that was rated at 0 degrees. Was toasty warm though I worked up up a sweat just trying to get situated in the bag. That's when I decided enough of that and got a top quilt.

My three season gear is rated for that. A JRB 3 season underquilt, or a Thermarest prolite/neoair, or a Big agnes insulated aircore, or a CCF foam pad of sufficient thickness (1/2 inch or so, or a couple thinner ones) will probably do it.

With a good large area pad and a good SB you should be OK...depending on your temperament. I personally never went below 40 til I got an UQ. Now I can go subzero with an UQ and a 0˚ Sb
