I "Went to ground" for one night.

Last weekend (11/18 & 19/06) I & 17 of my fellow cast members were invited to the Carolina Ren. Fest. in Charlotte NC. 700+ miles from my home.

We were allowed to camp for free, so I took my hammock. BUT, as it were chilly, my son & 2 of our friends were going to sleep in our 6 person tent. So, I decided to not be anti social & slept on the ground.

All I can say is:
THAT IS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN AGAIN!

We had heat, & I had 2 pads under me. I stayed warm, but I didn't sleep nearly as well as when I hang. The next morning I spent about 10 minutes finding a place to hang for when we go back next year I am so ready.


Summary: I am now convinced that sleeping on the ground SUCKS! Sleeping in a hammock RULES! Nuff said.

Live and learn....Don't go to ground...It really does suck once you are spoiled by the great nights in a well hung, insulated, protected hammock.

Find a nearby site if necessary...I once hung across the inside of a 90* corner in a barb wired cattle pasture, while those I was with tented in a available "town stop camp"... worked great, too.

Develop adequate insulation and shelter plans for every scenario...It is just not that hard.

well Rock I have to say you are half right - ground is for walking - sitting is for bear canisters or hammocks depending on how close the fire is

i have been on the ground 5 times in the last 2 years,i did not sleep at all on those 5 nights neo

OK, just to be sure, I slept in my hammock Tuesday nite. Yep, Ground is for: walking on, pooping in, holding up trees, etc. Ground is NOT for: sleeping on.

I agree with Pan, you need to be properly insulated. I was, slept on the ground to be social, Next time, Ill be social when awake, will sleep in the hammock.

Or you could put a hammock stand inside of a large tent. Make everyone else sleep "underneath" you.
