    Zippers?

    Hey guys,

I was talking with someone about my idea for using a sleeping bag, or a zippered poncho liner + a thermolite bag liner, and he thought zippers might be a problem. So I'm turning to you guys. Is there a risk of damaging the hammock with side zip sleeping bags due to pinching or rubbing, etc?

    Thanks,

    Anthony

I've only used my goose down sleeping bags as top quilts in my BBs and haven't noticed any sort of "zipper wear" at all.

The WBBB has zippers on it already. I've probably packed mine 50 or more times so far with zero signs of pinching or rubbing or etc.

I can see a potential problem if the zipper has sharp edges and you lay on it. The risk is small but I would be a little careful and inspect it for sharp edges. However I used my zippered sleeping bag extensively and never had a problem.

In reply #18 in this thread http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=27131 the poster said he had zipper wear on his hammock from using a sleeping bag. I've been using my MB bag as a top quilt since day one, so I got my hammocks out to check for wear. So far no problems.

I would avoid using a metal toothed zipper. But the nylon toothed zipper would seem to be acceptable risk. The continuous coil zipper would seem to be the best choice but they do not come in a separating style. For that you would need the toothed style.

So it seems like it can be a problem. I was thinking that bad things might happen if some of the hammock got pinched in the sleeping bag when trying to zip it up.

The tension on the fabric of the hammock would work against such pinching I would think. However, for me, a sleeping bag user, I do not try to zip the bag. I just use it as quilt.
