Intro and Speer DIY Hammock Questions

    Hey all,

Just wanted to introduce myself and ask a quick question. My name's Norm, and I live just outside of Washington, DC. I'm pretty new to hammock camping, having decided to make the switch after a few recent miserable nights on the ground (that, and viewing Shug's videos, which answered most of the questions I had that were holding me back from making the jump).

At any rate, I'm about to start making a Speer DIY hammock, bugnet and tarp. Instead of using the webbing Ed recommends, however, I've decided to use whoopie slings. I have one issue though.

Ed's directions have webbing attaching to the end of the hammock, with a D ring 12 inches from the end of the hammock to which the bug net line attaches. Question is, should I go ahead and (partially) use this setup, and attach the whoppie slings to the D rings, and go from there to a toggle on my tree straps, or do the whoopie slings actually need to attach to the hammock end?

Sorry if this is unclear, but any help is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Norm

    Hi Norm, and welcome.

As for your question. I dont think that you are going to want to hang off D-rings. The forces on the whoopie slings will probably break them and introduce you to the ground.

If my understanding is right, I'd just lash the whoopie slings to the end of the hammock fabric using a larks head, or sew on a channel and gather that way.

To anchor the bug net further dowm the hammock body, just sew on small reinforcement patches made out of gross grain or webbing, and use those to attach your d-rings.

Also consider just gathering the bugnet above the ends of the hammock and forget about the d-rings.

Hope that gives you some food for thought.

For gathered end hammocks, I like to put a small eye in the hammock end of the whoopie, and leave about 16" of length between the little eye and the whoopie bury. I pass the little eye through the end channel of the hammock, pass the whoopie through the eye, then tie a clove hitch below it. Voila! Integrated Whoopie Slings!

I put whoopies on my Speer...just use a larkshead below the gather. As for the bug net, put a prussic loop on each whoopie, and attach the net suspension.

    Awesome - thanks guys.

Gringo - I'll probably give the prussic a try. Should work, since there's basically no weight on the line.

I added whoopies after my speer was complete. I had good luck just putting a toggle in the webbing loop near the D-ring, and looping the whoopie over the toggle. I plan to reinforce this area, but haven't had problems so far.

Thanks John. From tree to hammock, I'm planning on going (in this order), tree strap, toggle, whoppie sling, hammock end knot. Just trying to figure out how to incorporate the bug net line into that setup.

I put my bugnet non-structural ridgeline on the whoopie, between the hammock end and the adjustable bury, using a stopper knot.

Good idea Mac - I hadn't thought of that. A stopper knot should b eperfect for this application.
