Hey all, new to the forums, sort of new to hammocks (about half a years worth playing around with hammocks) and I am planning a Thru-hike on the AT in 07. Only place I can see trouble for hangers is in Smokie Mt. Nat Park where unless the shelters are full you have to sleep in them. I guess a pad is a must through the park.

    Welcome to the forum.

For the Smokies I am going to try to be the last one to the shelter or the last one to claim a spot. I'm planning on starting in Mid March. With that start the Smokies should be crowded enough when I go through, hopfully.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

Not If I come in behind you, then you must sleep on in the shelter. A HAHAHAHAHAHAHa (just kidding, but thats a good idea, didn't think about it that way).

Maybe then we will have to ask one of the ground people to spread their stuff out in the shelter a little more. I am sure there will be one heavy weight person with a lot of stuff they can spread out.

There are a couple threads about this on WB.

Oh...don't worry...I WILL be the last one getting to a shelter...I have short legs! My other thought on this is that I seriously doubt the rangers are going to be doing middle of the night checks for this. I figure after dark, you're safe to go out and hang. All part of the excitement of playing it by ear when we get out there. Like hammock engineer always says, "things always work out."

So I know of 5 of us that are going to be hanging on a thru for 2007.

Me (I'll have a trailname someday)

Birdlegs (not sure if she's using it the whole way though)

i don't know about them tearing down the shelters, but wouldn't that be something if they started installing "hammock circles"?
that would be a heavy duty pole (phone pole) in the center, w/ a circle of poles around it, each one maybe 14' from the center pole & maybe 8' apart from each other<g>.
I too will something make and joy in it's making
