An ultralight knife/spoon

Well, after talking to Cannibal about the AT and knives, I had a little brainfart. I took my Sea to Summit titanium spoon, flattened part of the shaft and ground an edge on one side of the handle. Then I created a sheath for it so I wouldn't cut up my gear when I stored it. Sharp enough to cut sausage, cheese, or rope, but I won't be fending off bears with it. This is the result.

You can also buy titianium sporks that are out there, you wouldn't need a sheath for that.

Cool idea, does it affect the rigidity of the spoon at all? I may do that to mine, I like dual duty. But will still carry my 1 oz "real" knife just because.

Neat idea, fin. Just don't take a really big bite and slice your lip open. (seems like something I'd do)

It does a little. But because I freezer bag everything, the rigidity isn't that big of a deal for me. I probably wouldn't have had to pound the handle flat, just cutting an edge would work fine. My idea was to make a rubber sheath that I could clean easily, just haven't had the time yet. And I still carry a "real" knife, but it is handy to have the option on my spoon.

I have seen those, but they don't work well in a freezer bag (points, and all.) And the sporks are too short for a quart size freezer bag. You end up getting as much food on your fingers as you do on your hands. The Sea to Summit is a nice, long spoon that works great in a freezer bag.

The problem with the long handled spoons is how to store them while backpacking. The smaller handles you fit in the kits nicely.

Cut them in half, drill a matching hole and add a pop-rivet... Instant collapsible spoon... If you keep the handles curve, it'd lock into place...

I got to see this contraption in person and I gotta say, it was pretty neato! The sheath he has made for it should protect him from the sharpened edge with ease, although I can see it becoming a bit of a mess as it picks up pieces from the side of the freezer bag while in use. It is more impressive in person than the pictures show and a ridiculously simple idea that left me with one of those 'why didn't I think of that' moments.

Since I am single again (widower), I can modify the utensils anyway I want.

I am really a big "fork" guy and decided to "modify" one so that it could also be used as a knife. I used the Speedy Sharp* to sharpen one of the tines. Being right-handed, I sharpened the leftmost tine. The attached picture does not show this modification. Had my modified one in the cutlery drawer at work and it "disappeared". I'm keeping an eye out for a heavier duty fork than the one in the pic. That one is too weak in the neck and will bend if any amount of extra pressure is applied ( I know, cause I already tried "modifying one). I call mine the "fnife".

* The Speedy Sharp (and other names) is a sharpening tool that I just became aware of a few years ago. It has a super hard edge and can be used to sharpen just about anything. Have used it on axe heads, serrated blades, plus the usual kitchen knives, etc.

PS: Got a spork coming in the mail and may try to modify that as well, but what will I call it then?
