down or somthing else for under and top quill

hi everyone so I know most people here are big fans of down and i am leaning that way for many reasons but before i take the time and the cost to make these i want to make sure that down is the best material. my big concern is I am doing a thru on the a.t. this year and i am concerned about the rain. am i wrong or is down terriable if not useless if it gets wet. please help me out and point me to the best material to use I have a synthetic for warmer weather but i need somthing warmer for my late march start for my clark nx250. thanks

Down is the warmest insulator in consideration of both weight and packed volume. If you take care when packing up, the DWR coating on the quilt shell material is more than sufficient to protect the down.

Lots of thru-hikers have used down gear the whole way, quite successfully.

take care of condensation/sweat of your body, vent your down, hang it out to dry if you get the chance. It can get wet/moist because of a variety of factors and loses insulation fast when it does. be sure you know what you are doing before you are going out on the trail.
    have fun!
