    Amsteel suspension extensions?

    Hey guys,

Maybe I'm being thick here but can someone explain how to make the second fixed loop on an extension? I had a spare piece of amsteel so figured it might be handy to have an extension piece in my pack, I made the first fixed eye with a locked brummel, but surely you can't make the second the same was as you need to pull the standing end through the cordage & surely won't fit now it has an eye on the end?

    What am I missing here?

Take a look at this thread. I've made a couple of extensions using this technique.

Direct link to New England Rope web page on making a locked brummel using only one end of a rope.

The thread shane linked is what I do as well. Specifically I like these pics. of the McDonanld brummel.

To be honest I find it the same as making the second brummel by pulling the standing end through the amsteel. It's a little tight but not impossible. I like using the McDonald brummel when I cannot access the other end easily.

I make mine just as you described, pulling the standing end through the cordage even though it has an eye on the end. I use a mechanical pencil to push through the amsteel to make a hole large enough to pass the end through.

Cheers chaps. Got it sorted. Made a 5ft extender for 'just in case'.

Ended up with a little bit of extra cord so made a continous loop lanyard for my knife Too much spare time methinks..

I do the same as Tendertoe. I just use my splicing tool to pull it through, works great.

I attach using a marlinspike hitch on the end, so the extender does not need a second fixed loop, but I have had success making brummels just pulling the entire other fixed eye through the cord. Its a little tight, but doable since you don't actually have to run it through a bury, just split the strands and pull it through.
