Eliminating breath condensation on top quilt

Awhile back Shug mentioned hooking a piece of fleece to the ridgeline above his face to catch breath condensation from collecting on the top quilt. I tried this last weekend on an overnighter. The low temp was only about 25F but breath condensation is still an issue at those temps particularly from the nose since your nose angles down toward the top quilt. I tied the corner of a bandana on the ridgeline of my traveler hammock and then tucked the bottom of it into my balaclava at my chin. The results were excellent! The bandana was soaked in the morning but I had zero condensation on my top quilt which was great! I don't move around much in the hammock when I sleep so this method worked great for me and I'll for sure be doing this on all cold weather trips from now on. Thanks for the tip Shug!

I tried this a few weeks back with great success too! It's one of those "this is so simple, why didn't I think of it!" things. Shug's video, amongst the wealth of info on this site, have been of real help.

First I have to learn how to sew (well, I knew that!), ... then I have to spend lots of time in Joann Fabrics, ... now I have to wear a bib to sleep? Y'all are turning me into a big sissy!!!

Thanks much pizza for your efforts and conclusions. Experience!!! such a good teacher

Shug be the man, what an inspirational guy, talents and ideas galore. Thank you Shug.

I'll be trying out a DIY frost grabber tomorrow if all goes well. I have my bridge hung, did a trial hang a few weeks ago and am ready for a second shot at it. Temps are suppose to be in the single digits and will test my abilities.

Here are some photos of what I had sewn up yesterday. Six segments with fringe that will hold max amount of frost. The fringe will act like small fingers reaching out to grab all they can Material is Maldden Mills fleece. Suppose to be pil resistant when washed. (we'll see.)

The piece is 20" in diameter.

    A thought.........

I wonder if a wicking tee shirt, with just your head through the neck hole and the hem clipped to the ridgeline with suspender clips would work as well as a custom-fabricated device?

    Just thinkin out loud.

I got good results from draping a 3' square silk bandana under my chin, and over the TQ. I don't have a ridgeline, but it worked well just the same.

I imagine a wicking t-shirt would work just fine. I was thinking of bringing along an old cotton tshirt to try out. I normally just use a l/s hiking shirt so wouldn't normally have a wicking t with me.
