KAQ 3-Season: How would you do it?

All,

As a relative noob...I want to say that I have found Hammock forums a fountain of knowledge and a consuming place for getting "mental flossed"! Who would have thought some simple ingredients like fabric and rope could consume a person. Of course I now realize that it is much more than this....

Ok...now to my ponderings for the more experienced:

About me:
-ENO Double Nest w/whoopie slings
-5'10" (165lbs.)
-Warm Sleeper
-Like simple vs. uber-tech
-Lean towards comfort vs. ultralight



Objective: Hammock the entire AT (northbound)

Departure date: March (not sure if early or late)

-Would a Jarbridge/Owyhee work for the colder temps? Perhaps supplemented with a silk liner and reflective space blanket between hammock and UQ?

-I grasp the concepts of keeping warm from the many threads and videos I have read and watched, however, at what point is an UQ typically too hot? Is there something that long distance backpackers use in temps between an UQ and bare hammock?

Pads work and could be used in a shelter if wanted. I think a combo of a zlite and a 3season UQ would be perfect for something like the AT, albeit a bit heavy. You could use a 2/3 Down UQ (Hammockgear, Warbonnet, Leigha's, etc) and the Z-lite to save some weight and have the option to go to ground if desired.

Pads or a reflective liner, and a sleeping bag liner for the top would all add a comfort range to extend the temp range a bit for the coldest conditions.

As to too hot, most folks find that they don't need an under quilt when the overnight temps are above 70. Some can go lower than that but most need it at least that to be comfortable.

I would really like to get out and do a long hike at some point....maybe when the kids are older

Quoting another member, under quilts are never too hot until you reach a temp where no UQ is needed. Not everyone agrees with this but that's been my experience especially since you can vent many UQs.
