    what about bamboo?
    My gathered end hammock has a "tube" that originally had the tie offs threaded through, which I dont use, instead I replaced the tie offs with a whipping. I wonder though, would a bamboo pole through the hemmed tube work if tie offs were placed at either end of the hammock, on the poles? Bamboo is pretty strong, however the force/weight migh be too much. I'm approx 165-170 LBS.

    maybe cary along some hardwood dowel? (not talking UL here, just comfort and possibilities)

    I was thinking the same thing about bamboo, what exactly is the formula for stress on a spreader bar in a grizz bridge?

    TeeDee and I now still occasionally use bamboo, but have gone back to oak dowels mostly, 3/8" diameter. Use the oak for the foot end and have it strapped to the hiking pole with very short lengths of shock cord and then use the hiking pole for the head end.
