I have never seen ripstop at Walmart. I asked one time and was told they didn't carry it. Perhaps it's a regional thing? Regarding taffeta, Doesn't that get awfully hot? The summers here have very high humidity and I don't want something that will make me even sweatier.

    Thanks,
    Rob

It's still lighter weight than the rip stop I can get. It breaths comparably to the ripstop and that's 6 bucks a yard at Hancock Fabrics. If you have a Hancock look for coupons in the paper, sometimes you can get 1/2 off.
A lot of the WalMart's are closing out all their fabrics so if you find any there you'll be a lucky dog.

+ 1 on 12 feet being best for comfort.

    and width of 60 inches.

My second DIY (first one I liked) was taffeta from Walmart bargain bin (Note: Most Walmart's have dropped the sewing material department )

I then made a Hennessy clone and a 48 in. wide risk design. Neither was as comfortable as the 12 footer.

I thought I'd respond because my first experience with hammocks I had the problem your describing. What I did to solve the problem was I changed the folding of my hammock before tying the ends. I inverted my fold so I would have more shoulder space, but be more shallow. Now, when I get into my hammock, I have lots of flop on the sides. It has really changed my lay in the hammock and most importantly my comfort in the shoulders.

There are lots of threads about folding the hammock ends to help you out.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.
