Quetico: one TQ for many temps?

Your advice is needed.

I am planning a fourteen day solo to Canada's Quetico wilderness in late August. I've done many trips to the Q but this will be my first as a hanger. I'll bring a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.7 with tarp and, a Warbonnet winter Yeti 3/4 UQ.

From experience I know that daytime temps will range from the low 50's to the high 70's ... and I'll have layers to handle that.

On most nights, temps will be in the 50's or 60's but, I know that at least two nights will be in the twenties, possibly with snow. Most nights will be mild; some will be pretty cool.

If you were doing this trip and only had room for one TQ, which one would you bring? Why?

I'd bring my 3-season HammockGear Burrow and a down jacket like the Montbell Alpine UL. The 3-season burrow should laugh off any of the temps you listed and my temperature is easily regulated by venting, i.e. throwing it to my side, and, should I feel like I need more, I can put on my jacket to supplement.

As the SUL hikers at BPL would say, if you're not wearing all your layers to bed, you're carrying too much. The TQ alone will handle the 50's and 60's and the TQ with jacket and possibly down pants will handle the coldest nights.

I don't have one, but if the summer Burrow rating on the Hammock Gear site is accurate and most nights would be 50's/60's, I'd probably bring that one instead and rely on the down layers again for the coldest nights.

Late August is actually pretty warm up here. Last year I went to Quetico in September, no UQ, just a Thermorest pad, no TQ, just a sleeping bag with a small fleece blanket inside and I was plenty warm, I did sleep with my spare clothes all tucked around me though. And you don't have to worry about snow in August, I've never seen it in my lifetime! A bit of frost maybe, but definitely not snow. But, seeing as you're from waaaay south of here, any 3 season set up should do you just fine. Have fun : )

Debi -- Thanks for the response. True, I've never seen snow in the Q in August, but two years ago we awoke to a very heavy frost on August 15th (it had been 64 two nights earlier).

I clearly remember a July 4th when we awoke to snow and ice ... uh, that was over 40 years ago before global warming.

The reason I go in August is for the generally mild temps ... but I worry that a cold wave is likely sometime during a two week period at that time of year.

i use a 20 degree down top quilt from 20 degrees up to the 80's in the summer. if it gets too hot i simply vent, or kick it off me down into the footbox...
