    Whelen tarp tent and hammock?

    All,
I searched the threads and found only one mention of the Whelen tent. Has anyone tried to make a frame in the field and lay it OVER the ridge pole? I think this would allow a secondary pole going across the frame from side to side inside the tent, allowing a hammock to be hung inside and parallel to the opening.

Has anyone done or seen this before?

I have never set up the frame as Whelen use to back when, but I have set up a 3m X 3m in the style of whelen but jsut using the same trees as the hammock .
    I love this set up.

You can see that I didnt pitch right to the ground on the back side as it was a warmish night with no bad weather and I wasnt sleeping on the ground!

Would love to see the set up you mention in action. Some of the best of old and new!

I've got an actual Whelen, with the fold down ends etc rather than just "bending the tarp, in the scale model stage, just need some sil to get started. Last fall I had a semi-whelen/baker thing going on with a poly tarp, shown here.
    Good luck,

    Nice set up Redoleary!

I was lucky enough to find a copy of Whelen's book a year or so ago. Its has the original pattern in it. I have some canvas and am looking to put one together to specs. Ill try it wiht my hammock when I get it all done. Hope by this time next year!

I have been meaning to do a Whelen in Tyvek with my daughter. I was looking for a builder in the area who would had 9' wide rolls and would sell me about 22'. That would allow a one piece construction on everything except a bit of the front overhang. I have all of the measurements and angles laid out on graph paper, so it will be pretty easy to lay out the chunk in the driveway and just measure and cut, then tape on the front.

If I did my math right, it will be just around 2.5 lbs for the material after cutting. But it would be a palace of a tarp, especially on those days when you are rained in for a long time. If you have ever been in a tent on a warm rainy day playing cards with a group of people, you know how clammy that gets.
