A hammock will keep you cooler, off the ground and more comfortable. I still think you can have the best of both worlds.

Google Hexayurts. Design a lightweight take down frame that supports a hammock, attach the rigid insulation panels, and move in. Good luck.

First, Build a 40 foot purple polyethylene caterpillar. tie one end to that. Next mentally materialize a spinning titanium rainbow double helix rising out of the sand. Tie the other end to that.

A hammock is a great option, especially for day time naps (which is really the best time to sleep, too hot during the day to do much but veg out). Our setup was basically a big dome, with a super thick UV reflective "SUV cover" tarp strung along the top of the dome covering the strip the sun will follow. You don't want to block the wind necessarily, since this is what will keep you cool during the day. Heat stroke is a major concern, so any way to keep cool is important, a hammock is great for this since you can get convection above and below you. Add in sufficient UV protection, and it can feel a good 20-30 degrees cooler in the hammock than out in the sun or in an enclosed space like an RV.

It sounds you are maybe thinking about using the wrong tool for the job. Unless you are looking to "prove a point" maybe a tent would be the better option in this case?

This is my first year, the others I am going with are more experienced Burners. We will bring the hexayurt from last year and one of the other folks is considering either getting an RV or making another hexayurt. The hammock will probably be used primarily for daytime napping and the hexayurt for sleeping at night. If an RV is in the mix, I can tie off one end to that and maybe tie the other end to a 4x4 post with an eye bolt. How tough is it to dig in the playa with a post hole digger?

One of my friends likened Burning Man to being inside a vacuum cleaner bag for a week.
From what I hear, finding the appropriate pharmaceutical won't be a problem !!!!!
