    How to reduce sway

    Hi All,

Attempted my first night in a home made, by a mate, hammock on the weekend.

The hammock is very comfortable however i found a lot of sway which takes some time to settle, any tips on how to reduce? any mods etc?

I also only lasted about 1/2 hour in there due to some huge cramps i was having in my stomach, but thats another issue.

    Cheers
    Mark

i like the sway, however add tie outs if you don't already. If you do, are they bungie? If they are, make them something not elastic. If you are adding tieouts I think the best location it the left shoulder and the right knee.

yep, the tie outs should help. or you could keep your trekking pole leaning up against the hammock & use it to stop the swaying after you get into a comfortable position.

but i'm like dutch, i like the swaying... mater a fact, i love it!
i like to have a little extra distance between trees so i'll swing longer before having to get myself started swinging again
I too will something make and joy in it's making

I've found that if you put a little honey on the bottom of your hammock, the bears swatting at the hammock keep it swinging pretty well. Less work for me.

I agree with you, Chris...I'm usually trying to figure out how to keep a gentle sway last longer. I find it relaxing....but, that's just me.

I'd stick with bungee tieouts, or you may rip your hammock some night when you wake up groggy for a nature call. They won't stop the hammock from swinging, but they'll damp it quickly. Take a look at a Hennessey for an example. The thin bungee sold for tent pole repair will probably work.

    I also like the swing.
But if you use tie outs, they should have some stretch or you may rip your hammock. I used them ONE time, & found that the swing stops almost immediatly, even with all elastic cords. I have no experience with this, but it seems to me that static cords (those that don't stretch) would either pull free from the hammock, or pull out the stakes used to anchor them to the ground. I suspect that this will likely happen as you enter / exit the hammock.
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.
