I think he'd prefer a mild salsa, containing no or only little capsaicin.

Maybe "ask a racoon" would be another good article to write... or "ask a snake" -- wow the angles here are endless! Seriously, while I think it's interesting, it's certainly not scientific.

It's just somebody's opinion. He sights no basis for this assumption. Another reason I don't read Backpacker. Made up junk-stories and urban yuppie gear.

I agree with Joe Cross - I stopped reading Backpacker a long time ago....half of the magazine was nothing but ads, the remainder were useless articles.

I just don't see how a hammock and tarp is arguably less a "psychological deterrent" to the bear than some backpacking tent?
I think the tent is just a safety blanket for the fearful.

It has been well established that Backpacker Magazine in general has no use for hammock camping. There have been a few inroads made with some selected writers but on the whole... I suspect the overall culture of the rag has not changed.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

That article made me laugh. I think a hammock is actually safer. From a tent I gotta get up un zip and stand up. No net hammock swing out feet hit the ground and I do the first thing I'm not supposed to and start running in my skivies for my life
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.
