underquilt advice?

so im gonna buy a -20 sleeping bag and im trying to decide between a 3/4 winter UQ or a full 3 season, im 6'6'' so the 3/4 is almost like a 1/2 for me and im wondering if the 15 degree difference between the two UQ will be that big of a difference since i have a -20 sleeping bag...any thoughts?

You could also see about a customization to your order with oe of the vendors here to accomodate your height if you feel what they have currently might be insufficient. Personally I'd go with the full length, but if you're worried about weight most tend to gravitate towards the 2/3's and some to 3/4's

If you go with the 3/4, you'll still need insulation under your legs for colder times, even with the sleeping bag. Most people use a ccf pad. I would go with the full length, but that's just me. What temps do you plan on camping in? With a good UQ, the top insulation can be a bit lacking without consequence, but it doesn't work the other way around. Example: I used a 10F UQ (with space blanket) and 25F TQ in 7F weather, and was warm. Bottom line, the bottom insulation matters more.

Why not get the best first time around. The Speer PolarPod. More expensive, but could save you money in the long run.

WB Winter Yeti

Hammock Gear Winter Incubator

Speer PolarPod


And in my view, by far the Speer PolasPod stands out as the best for winter hanging. And for summer use it works as a sleeping bag too. But then again it is the most bulky and weighs the most of the above mentioned products (which are all quality products). So for UL hiking the WB Winter Yeti might be the best.

stormcrow can make a custom long under quilt for you. He is making me one, full length, and I am 6'5. I went with full length so i wouldn't have to add a pad.

I don't think weight is a top concern if you're getting a -20 sleeping bag.

My thought - what's under your hammock will be the bigger factor in keeping you warm, so it should be rated appropriately to the temps where you're going to go.

You won't need a -20 degree bag - if it's at all accurately rated - anywhere you would want a 3 season underquilt. So I'm a little confused what you're trying to do here.

Check out the Jacks-R-Better Mount Washington 3 Convertible. It's a 2/3rds under quilt when you want it and a full lenght under quilt when you need it.

and don't forget your bottom half is more out in the open unless you have a BIG tarp ....

but yes like others have said a good underquilt is key
like PF i use a JRB HR for my TQ in the winter...it's only a 25F quilt...but i use a 0F UQ ...

also will help to know if you plan on doing more hiking or more car camping..
if you are going to do more car camping...go with a full UQ .. if your going to do some backpacking...a 3/4 UQ is the way to go it save on weight and pack space
you can always use a small piece of blue wally world pad in the footbox of your TQ for your feet

but this is something YOU need to figure out ... everyone is different so it's really hard to tell you what YOU should get

I have a 5 degree Western Mountaineering down bag with a Hammock Gear Winter Pheonix down UQ and have stayed warm in -20F weather.
A -20F bag might be a bit overkill, large to pack and heavy.
