    Tent-Hammock weight comparisons.

After looking at some of the weight of current gear I was rather surprised.

    Tarptent Rainbow-35 oz
    Neo air (reg) -14 oz
    Marmot Helium -38 oz

    87 oz= 5.43 lbs

Warbonnet BB 1.1 DL -28 oz
    warbonnet superfly -21oz
    summer borrow -15 oz
    3 season Phoenix -16 oz

    80 oz= 5 lbs

I was always willing to to carry the extra weight to hammock but it looks like hammock camping is the lighter choice.

One of the reasons (besides the comfort) that I switched from a tent to a tarp was to save weight. My old Tarptent Cloudburst was 38 ounces. My Grandtrunk hammock and Etowah tarp setup with ridgeline and tree huggers comes in at 31oz. Not a lot of savings, but every ounce adds up when you are going UL.

    For me, it looks like:

    Tarptent Sublite (tyvek) 22 oz
    Neo Air medium 13 oz
JRB 20-25 degree 3 season Hudson River 22 oz (has a mod that added 2 oz)

    or

    Blackbird 28 oz
OES MacCat Deluxe 14 oz (with lines/tensioners)
    JRB Hudson River x 2 44 oz
    OR, JRB + Warbonnet Winter Yeti, 22 + 17 = 39 oz

My low lows are generally 20-30F. Have been trying to get out with the winter yeti lower, not yet.

my tarp is cuben at 8 oz
top quilt is JRB at 28 oz.

    for ground....pad is 40 oz w/ground cloth & stakes 4.9 lb total

for trees.....hammock and under quilt are 37 oz. w/foot pad & stakes is 4.9 lb.

the weight - 5 lb. is about the same tarp or hammock at 0 degrees. hammock has been to -5 and tarp to 12.

Not always, it depends on your setup. You can take:

    GG Spinntwinn - 10oz
    Neo air - 14oz
    Ti Goat Bivy - 10oz
    JRB Hudson River - 20oz
    Stakes - 2-3oz

This was my ground 3 season set up at approx 56-57oz for shelter and sleeping. I still think on the whole that hammocking is heavier, but there is a trade off for comfort. My hammock set up is currently around 60-70oz without any tinkering.
WB Traveler and Bug Net - 24
    JRB Hudson River - 20
    Maccat standard spinn - 11
    IX 3/4 underquilt - 10
    stakes - 2-4

    As always YMMV

I like to compare apples and apples - so for me, I am just comparing shelter vs shelter. It is difficult to compare sleep systems for hammocking vs ground, since they have different philosophies. I would hazard a guess that, for equal investment, you would have equal results either hangin or in a tent.

Ground shelter(Lightest tent I had) 41 oz(forgot to count the stakes)
Hammock shelter (complete) 34 oz (ditto stakes)

    cold weather ground sleep system:
    Thermarest zlite 10 oz
    Thermarest prolite 11oz
Marmot Helium 15deg bag 34 oz

    Cold weather hammock setup:
    JRB UQ 22oz
    WB TQ 23 oz

A small difference in weight, I would be warm in either of these rigs down into the mid 20s.

If I still had the Marmot, I can say with some confidence (after my Mt Roan experience) that it in conjunction with the TQ/UQ would take me below 0.
It could be that the purpose of my life is merely to serve as a warning to others.
