No need for whipping, and it's not going anywhere, once it's tight, but it's also easy to get loose to redo the gather, if you want.

I 2nd the mighty Sheetbend (slippery for me)
if i ever want to change the gather i just tug the slippery end with my multitool and POW!

I will second the zip-ties (aka cable ties) are the way to go. very quick, cheap, get 'em at you local hardware store. and they hold great. every hennesey hammock out there uses them I think.

The lark's head constricts w/ weight. The more weight, the harder it constricts.

I just looked at my hammock that I sleep nightly in & the suspension rope on one end was touching the whipping but at the head end there is an half inch of hammock fabric between the rope & the whipping.

So what I'm getting at is, in my experience the grip of the lark's head often doesn't even allow the suspension rope to slide at all, so the whipping is not needed to hold the suspension rope in place. The whipping just holds the hammock gathered the way you want it when the suspension rope is not taught.
Tim... I have seen my attachment knot that does not use separate whipping but has the whipping incorporated in the wrapping/knot itself and works fine with the 7/64 or 1/8 AmSteel not work with thicker 3.8 mm Spyder Line that has a sheath with a lot more friction. That surprised me and I haven't figured out if it was so thick that it could not choke down to a small enough radius to clamp down and hold or the extra friction impeded how well it was able to cinch and clamp down.
