I have made and bought lots of hammocks. First a single.

I hated sleeping on a pad directly. Tried to make SPE's but they always flopped around and were hard to get set on.

Made a double and thought it was great. Used it for two years. It was a bit heavy, since it was made from taffeta.
So, I made one from 1.1 ripstop as a weight reduction project. The thing about mosquitos is true. the florida bloodsuckers will drill right through a single layer, but two layers stops them cold.

The pad insertion is kind of a black art. I settled on carrying 1 1/2 pads and criss crossing the shorter piece. This made centering a lot easier. BUT still kind of fidgety.

and then I began to develop a of case underquilt envy. It ate at my guts for a year or so. Recently I broke down and made a down underquilt. Based on a few nights in it, it is the bomb!! clip it on and jump in.

I would suggest you make a double layer Hennessy clone. See Headchange4U writeup (Why isn't this indexed in articles?? I always have to search by his name to find it) just add the second layer . I have to agree that the hennessy end fold seems to give a superior flat lay

Good luck and I bet you can't make just one!!!

Already working on the second one! The first is for the wife and used it to see how much longer I should make one for myself. Hopefully will be finished tomorrow.

Then onto stuff sacks, under quilts, top quilts, bug screens, pea pods, tarps, maybe a pack... It's never going to end, is it?

Just makes more sense to me. The change was prompted by me started to use the hammock in winter. Mine had an integrated bugnet which I wasn't using. That plus the second layer meant I was carrying three times as much material as needed!

The only time I think I'd use a double is in the summer with an integrated bugnet as it's harder for skitos to bite through two layers. However! I'll be using my hammock with a fully enclosed bugnet so it makes that point moot..
