    Too inovative too early?

I've been singed on to this site for a few hours, and I can tell it will be my new addiction. I just have something I'd like ot run by you seasoned engineers. I have a Eureeka Solitaire backpacking tent that I think I can turn into an under/top quilt. (I hope I'm using the jargon correctly, as I haven't even camped in my hammock yet) I can pull my hammock all the way through the tent and pull the attached rain fly after I'm in. It also has a bulit in bug net as the entrance. My biggest question is--- Will the tent be enough to break the wind and insulate me? Has anyone ever heard of this being done/failed? It seems like it will work. I'm going to set it up tomorrow, when it's daylight. I'll try to post some video to let you know how it works/doesn't work out. Thanks for any feedback.

Sorry. Just realized I probably should have put this in DIY.

Below 55*F you might need more than a wind break. Perhaps you could put stuff inside, underneath the hammock. Give it a try!

    Eagerly awaiting pictures!

That's an amazingly inexpensive one person tent. I saw it for $50! Of course, I have no use for it, even if it cost $25.

I believe you're referring to using your tent as either a tarp (generally pitched over a ridgeline and staked to the ground) or a ... I forget the generic term for the other thing, but it's like a peapod. If the tent will be surrounding you and not really touching the ground, the latter is what you mean. Anyone whose brain works better than mine want to pitch in on that last bit?

Tent is made to lay flat and hammock isn't, how would you overcome the sag that would happen in the middle of the tent?

the problem you'll likely run into is length. most tents are just long enough for a 6' person to lay down in, but most hammocks are over 9' long with ridge lines well over 7.5' long. the hammock is likely to hang out the ends which if the tent is just there to break the wind is ok but if you also want it to keep rain off you wouldn't have enough coverage.

Comparative lengths may present a problem. Tents are generally shorter than hammocks. There is also the question of condensation. I'm not a designer so I'm just floating my own questions here. As is typical of the answers here.... try it out and let us know.

    sheesh... got scooped.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

I am not carrying both my tent and my hammock into the woods. Car camping, if you could make this set up work, might be feasible, but it looks like a hard way to get to an Air biviy or whatever they are called.

I've looked hard at one of my rain flys to an old tent, to see if it might convert to a make shift hammock tarp. Like the guys have said. Too short to cover 10.

These are big IF's but if the tent was long enough what about turning the hole tent into a hammock? If it strong enough to hold you up? Could you use hiking poles to create a bridge hammock and just run your ridge line through the tent to create something like a Clark Jungle hammock / Bridge hammock hybrid. Then your back to your original issue of insulation.
Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

I am not a scientist and am so grateful for those who are, but from my own experience when I break wind I always feel warmer...
