    Sounds like an expensive experiment, but I suppose it would work as you described. It would likely not work as well in "cool mode" as a detachable underquilt, in that the compressed down configuration would still be insulating more that just removing the underquilt all together.

    While I admire your creativity, I can't think of a way to do what you are trying that would be work as well as having an underquilt that you can remove for full-out cool mode, or adjust to fit with gaps for partial cool mode.

    how would that be any easier/cheaper than buying a UQ. The disadvantage is you are always carrying the extra weight of a UQ even if you dont need it. Furthermore, you can only build your hammock for one temp range.

    If you found a reflective material similar to an emergency blanket, but mroe durable, you could attach it to one side of a hammock. In the cold weather, turn it to the inside to reflect heat. In the summer, turn it on the outside; however, you'd need to be able to "release" the reflective material from being so close to your body, so your body could breathe and not get sweaty and hot.
    I like big hammocks - I cannot like.
