    Length of Whoopie?

Ok so I'm in the planning process of my first hammock and I think I have settled on some webbing with a toggle and Whoopie slings. However I'm curious what a good length would be for a Whoopie sling. I read SlowBro's DIY thread on Whoopie slings and it said something like 12ft. Is that 12ft for 1 Whoopie or is that divided in half to make a 6ft Whoopie for both ends?

    Straight from Opie...

Your tree strap length should be determined by the average diameter of the trees in your area. That being said... 6 or 8' seems to be the average.

Slings {whoopie} are the same deal... 6 or 8'. If you wanted me to nail something down... Id say 8' straps and 6' slings. But thats based on what works for me. If the trees are bigger in your area, you may want the insurance of longer straps.-opie
So for most people (including me) 1 set (2) 6' whoopies.

Keeping in mind it takes almost 14' to make a single 6' whoopie.
My knife is so sharp it cut the sixth finger off my right hand! On the plus side, Inigo Montoya no longer hunts me.

So far since i've been using whoopie slings I've found myself coming across more minimum hang distance problems than maximum hang distance problems.

In addition to my WS and straps I pack an additional 3ft of amsteel as an extender, and 3ft of webbing incase I come across any particularly big trees.

Yes these replies help me out a lot guys thanks!
I didn't realize that I was gonna need so much length to create the WS though.
What would ya'll say is the cheapest way to hang as far as suspension?

Cheapest? Compared to what? The cheapest option will be the suspension that is included with your hammock. Insightful, I know.

    Cheers

Well seeing as how it will be a DIY hammock it won't come with one.

I would say get a pair of 15' Ratcheting Tie Downs from harbor freight. Just cut off the hook and don't cut the strap or the loop. Bring the strap around the tree, through the loop, all the way to your hammock. Use a sturdy piece of branch (that won't compress) as a toggle in a marlin spike hitch (easy to re-tie for adjustments). Then a small loop of your rope of choice attached to your hammock with a larks head to hang off the marlin spike hitch.

Hmm I'll have to look into the ratchet straps, may have some of those in the garage already.
