First Tarp 10X12 DIY Sil and DIY Bugnet

Here is my first go at a tarp. I wanted a tarp big enough that both me and my wife can hang under (I think I went overkill!) After hanging the tarp I decided I needed another tie out point in the center of each side, and I have since added those but its not in these pics. This tarp is rectangular and is made from 1.1 oz ripstop from BWDD. I sewed 1/2" grosgrain rolled inside all the perimeter seams and the ridgeline. The tieouts are reinforced with 210D material from BWDD. The tieout loops are 1" grosgrain with plastic d-rings. This is not only my first shot at a tarp but will also be my first shot at DIY sil... hopefully turns out good! I will be applying the silicone tomorrow! The tarp weighs 21 oz before the silicone. I will take pics of it and post them and thoughts... and also get pics of my DIY bugnet - 8 oz with stuff sack (based off hammock bliss noseeum cacoon)

    Well done.
Very interested to hear how your silicone application goes as well.

Great job! Tell us how putting on the sil. goes.

I have the same material and started the project, but haven't finished it. I'm thinking about changing my plans with the fabric.
I like big hammocks - I cannot like.

    Sil Soultion Application

I just got through putting the sil mixture on the tarp! I hung the tarp in more of a A-frame fashion so I could reach up to the ridgeline. I started out with about a 4:1 ration on the silicone to oderless mineral spirits. As I was mixing I noticed that when I stopped bubbles reamianed suspended in the solution. So I added a few ounces(unmeasured) to the solution to get a little better consistency. I then used a foam brush to spread the solution onto the tarp from the outside. With light shining through the tarp I could see where the soulution was soaking all the way through and where I needed to kinda scrub it through. I noticed that doing it this way really pushed the solution through the material and I was able to just smooth it out on the inside. After I felt an area was coated/soaked good, I would make sure the foam brush didn't have alot of solution on it and smooth back over to remove/smooth out any excess. I then stretched it out and pulled up the sides to let it dry. I will post again, likely tomorrow after it dries good with test results of 'waterproofness'!

BTW thank you all for all the good comments!

Edit: original post said weight was 21 oz, but I had some extra stuff hanging on there and the actual tarp only weighed 19 oz before sil solution applied. We will see how much the sil added! I know this is kinda heavy for most tarps, but this thing is HUGE and the fact that we can both hang comfortably under it with room to spare is worth it for me!

    Bugnet

I also promised pictures of my DIY Bugnet. It works great for me!! It is pretty lightweight for a full cocoon style net too! Its almost the same size as the Hammock Bliss version but weighs 10 oz less.

I think I'm going to patent my zipper pulls! LOL! just a piece of small line with a zig zag stitch holding it together!

    Testing

The tarp dried quicker than I thought and I already tested it! It worked perfectly!! Even with the nozzle only a foot away on full water power, not even a mist came through! Very please! I will get a finished weight as soon as it dries from the testing!
