Now, if I can find 2 trees in Nebraska

Well, actually, in some parts of the state we do have trees.
Anyway, I decided I better get aquainted cuz later on I plan to ask lots of questions.
I have have done a lot of car camping and yearly canoe trips in the Minnesota Boundary Waters. The early years were spent in tents - later, with kids grown and doing some solo trips I just hang a tarp to live under. I like the open feeling much better than the tent. But it's still on the hard ground. Somehow (don't remember exactly) a few weeks back I came upon the idea of using a hammock. The idea took root and is really growing.
Who would have thought that there would be an internet forum dedicated to hammock use?
I haven't done much real backpacking (just the canoe trips) but plan to hike the Superior Hiking Trail later this year just to see if a long walk on the AT is realistic for me.
I haven't bought a hammock yet - still lurking around trying to learn as much as I can. Can't lurk forever because I can't see the pictures you post without becoming a member

Obviously, I don't have much to offer the group (yet) but I will give you a chance to share your wisdom...

I plan on going to Boundary waters this year too to see the Northern lights. I hear it's amazing there. Also, I will be going to SHT quite often this year at well. Keep an eye on the trip planning page because you can learn quite a lot by going to a group hang. Hope to see you on the trail and welcome to HF!

Welcome to HF, Passinthru. You mentioning a lack of trees reminded me of something. Last fall, my son and I got one of the last available campsites at a campground in North Carolina. It had one tree. We hung two hammocks from that tree and attached the other ends to the rear roof rack corners on my Tahoe. It worked out really neat because we were side by side with our tarps overlapped. Wish a had a picture to post!

Welcome to the forum from Florida where trees are so close, only a 3' long hammock will fit! We all have our challenges but the superior comfort of a hammock makes us overcome them.

Welcome to the HF. I'm sure that I saw some trees the last time I was in Omaha. There are a few of us from Nebraska. Hope to see you at a hang sometime. A hang is in the plans for this October at Indian Caves State Park.

Actually, the reference to a lack of trees was a little exaggerated. In some parts of the state I think you could walk for 50 miles without hitting a tree. But I recently moved to Omaha - right near the Missouri River - lots of timber here. The idea of a group hang at Indian Cave is appealling - should have picked out a hammock by then.
