I am planing a trip to Point Reyes next month. Camping there is only allowed in campsites. I was wondering if anyone has camped there and knows if there are places to hang? If so which sites do you recommend?
Thanks

There are a number of parks in the area. I've never camped at Pt. Reyes, so can't advise specifically. Having hiked the area, and anchored overnight there, I can say you can't beat the beauty. Recommend bbq'd oysters from any of the local vendors. I would recommend also the Muir Woods campsites, if you can stand mammoth redwood trees, which I can. Just south of Pt. Reyes. Stinson Beach right there and ok for dogs, also a good thing. Lastly, since you're not local, I should tell you its pronounced "Pt. Rays," which only the local news anchors get wrong, always to our delight.
I wouldn't take a hammock to Point Reyes. A couple camps are in brushy areas, one is on a treeless bluff. The area has some groves of trees, but no guarantees.
Google Point Reyes campsites and click on images - see what I mean. You'll see trees in the background in pics of Glen Camp, but you probably would get a fine for being outside designated campsites. National Park system is not forgiving of being out of bounds of designated camping spots, as I found out in Sequoia when I parked my hammock over a granite slab and let my buddy have the tent area. Backpacking I have no issues whatsoever in California except when there's a designated campground.
I'm planning on going to point reyes this weekend...hoping it clears up, I'll go rain or shine. The best spots to hang are in sky camp and glen camp. At sky camp check out sites 11 and 12. Site 11 really only has 1 place to set up but offers the best view. Site 12 is set back farther in a grove of pine trees with many opportunities for hanging. There is a very sleepy hollowesque feel to the place when it's foggy. Both are good sites. Also site 5 looked pretty good but I didn't get much of a chance to explore that site.
Glen Camp also has a couple of decent sites for hanging. Sites 1 and 2 and I think 9. You can also most certainly ask the park ranger if you call the station.

Are you taking a chance with a first come/first served? I was heading over to Big Basin Redwoods SP tomorrow.
That's right by where I live
Actually near Rancho del Oso, the Ocean side of Big Basin. Beautiful, should have some awesome waterfalls after this storm we just had...
Sorry, haven't been around for a bit. As far as the first come first served goes, it would probably depend on when you're planning on going. If you're going on a weekend I would definitely call ahead and make a reservation otherwise be sure to get to the ranger station early and get in as soon as they open up(I believe they open at 9:00 am). It's easy enough to reserve a site to know that you'll have a hammock friendly site. Also, if you're going to be getting there after the office closes they have a permit drop box for you to pick up your reserved permit.
I myself always call and make a reservation. Fees are the same either way.
The number to call to make reservations is (415) 663-8054 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
I didn't get to make it out the other weekend because it was raining and my girl had to use the car and although I'm not opposed to riding my motorcycle in the rain it was very windy that weekend.
