Shortening my hammock without any cutting

    Well, the thought occured (uh-oh)

Assuming for whatever reason I needed a hammock with a smaller 'footprint'

The hammock is a single layer gathered end. If I gathered the material down from the cinched end of the hammock and created a wad of material and whipped it there would it hold?

There's a couple of ways to shorten the hammock and keep it secure and safe.
A sheetbend knot can be used. Folks have doing that for years as a way to rig ther hammocks.

Or tie an overhand knot in the material and re tie your suspension below the knot.

I've used both and they held fine. Getting the overhand knot out after it has been stressed by body weight can be a trick. I'd recommend the sheetbend.

Perhaps you could double over the fabric making a bend out of it and tie a sheet bend with your suspension?

Edit - Yea, what Gargoyle said.

I agree with Gargoyle. The sheetbend has worked for me and is fairly easy to undo.

If your using your whoopie to tie it up with..
I run a larkshead around the end of the hammock as normal, then fold the fabric to the desired length. Then wrap the two sections of fabric together with two wraps, like a whipping, run the whoopie around the wrapped rope and back up through the fold in the fabric. Cinch everything snug by hand first, then sit gently, testing the holding power.

This method works well with whoopies since you do not need "knots" or have to undue your eye in the whoopie.
Once it is not needed, everything can go back to normal, and your whoopie sling performs as usual in either application.
