    UQ Colorado Trail--Bikepacking

I am going to bikepack the Colorado Trail (500mi) during a 10 day ride this summer. I am looking for the lightest, smallest packing, best quality underquilt for these conditions to pair with my WBBB/MacCat Std. I really expect the lows to be around 40 but anything at altitude can happen. My first leaning was the Summer Phoenix--looks well made, pretty darn light. But the Warbonnet 3-S Yeti isn't much heavier and looks quite a bit warmer. From reading the posts on this awesome forum, it sounds like I could vent it just fine and it may be more versatile. But if it is overkill, then the Summer Phoenix may be the ticket. Money is less important--I don't get to do trips like this that often so I splurge when I do. Pretty please, love some advice.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Well, I use my 3-season Yeti all summer long out here in your neighborhood and I'd say be prepared for colder temps. I think I've only used a "summer" underquilt out here a couple of times and only because my other quilts were all loaned out. I don't trust them out here; it gets cold from out of nowhere and I'd rather stay warm. Not knocking any vendors, just saying IMO you should go with a 3-season UQ.

    Nice trail, have fun!

    Hi Chris,
I would recommend the the 3 season as well.

Just a note on your trip. Section 1 is closed for all of 2011.
They are dredging Strontia Springs dam.

I have Mtn Bikes section 1 thru 5 Waterton to Kenosha.
Its a great trail lots of climbing.

Thanks guys--I just ordered up a WB Yeti. I think the Hammock Gear products look incredibly awesome as well, but Brandon is a CO guy and I support local when ever I can. Bought my WBBB just recently so I know his work is awesome as well. Thanks for the advice! I also just ordered the Golite Ultralite Quilt with that 40% off code--that should do me for my sleeping system for now--I'll start testing it all out and get things dialed in.

I was very pleasantly surprised today to get an e-mail from Brandon saying my Yeti is shipping today--I was expecting the 2-3 week back order lead time that is on his site. That ROCKS! To friggin cold right now in Colorado to use it (chipped 1/8" of ice off my windscreen to be able to drive this morning) but my kit is definitely getting developed! My hammock/tarp/suspension/UQ/TQ comes in just shy of 5lbs. Not in the ultralite group, but **** fine for me given the quality of sleep one can get! Now to just get out and use it all...

Nah, this is the sweet season for temps out here; we just have to get you started.
Next year, you'll be chompin at the bit when you hear an Arctic mass is coming at us.

I'm in, for sure. I'll bring my A-game, which will probably include Ska Modis Hoperandi and Macallan. :-)
