To add to the earlier discussion about IX, I submit to you yet another possible solution. So let me know what ya all think about this plan. Thanks.

i like your video's but it's not until half way through i get what your objective is. can you also put the link to your first thread in your part two for easy reference?
instead of doing the 'tucks' and forgive me as i can't totally recall your first video, but what if you created baffles? say the bottom IX was 3' x 6' and the top would be 3'6" x 6' and then when you sewed the top to bottom you created a chamber with the extra material from the top? think of it as having a line and turning the number 3 counterclockwise 90deg?
when you attached this to your nylon, the bottom would be the same dimension as the bottom layer of IX but your top would be just enough not to collapse the loft from the IX baffles you created.
i could be off a bit...
Thanks bloomgorge, I'll admit these vid's arn't great, but its easier for me to see/show a concept rather than read about one.
My concern with a regular baffle would be that it would collapse. IX doesn't hold itself up well, but these "tucks" seem to be the most rigid thing I've found yet.... even better than a pleat. Even these tucks want to lay down if they get more than about 1/2" tall.
but I wonder if I were to sew the top layer to each tuck just like a baffle??
Good luck,

keep it up, good ideas. i've been noodling on making an IX top quilt but haven't solidified plans yet so maybe i'll copy your good ideas.
Sounds like a solid plan. If you're making a 3 layer TQ, sew the "tucks" on the inner-2 layers, have them off-set by 50% (so the tucks don't line up between layers) add your differential and go.
Given the weight of IX is small, why not figure out the spacing or size of tucks you need to get the width you want without cutting the IX narrower? The stuff is 60" wide (I think), which is too wide for a TQ anyway... If the IX is 60" wide, and you want a 48" wide quilt, that leaves 12" to tuck away. That's 24 x 1/2" tucks, spaced 2" apart starting 1" from the edge... or um... (calculator clicking) 16 x 3/4" tucks spaced at 3"... or ... 12 x 1" tucks at 4"...
Though as I think about it, I doubt the 3/4" tucks will trap more air than the 1/2" ones as they lay down, so maybe more, smaller tucks would be better, but more work... The top layer should be un-tucked, or maybe have the tucks facing inward... and offset...
I don't think sewing the ends down will make much of a difference, but it definitely won't hurt.
Was it your plan to go with fleece inside? (I don't recall... too many threads) That would make a REALLY warm quilt... You might want to try 2 layers, and see how it is before you add a third...
What Temps are you thinking you want to use this to?
I'm VERY interested in how this works out for you. I have 3 UQs, 2 TQs and 2 kids... so I need another TQ for one of them. I also have 4-5 yards of IX left!

just spit balling an idea that crossed my mind. What do you think of sewing 2 sheets of insultex like a sew through quilt and stuffing them with a synthetic fiber. like a synthetic version of JRB stealth.

Your video demonstrates exactly how the Molly Mac Gear Torso Heater is made. It's almost the same size as the piece in your video, at 2'x3'.
What you call "tucks" are longitudinal pleats. I considered interlocking pleats, but they are unnecessary. It doesn't matter if they lay down, because the thickness of two layers of IX is the gap that you seek. And you are correct that a differential cut will help the pleats work, by eliminating tension and allowing the IX to rest easy, at the right distance apart.
Is it a valid idea? I would say yes! We've been making Molly Mac Gear IX UQs and TQs that way for some time now.
Good job!

Thanks for the validation Mac. Sort of validates the "infinite monkey theorem" too, given enough time I could eventually randomly retype the completed works of Shakespear, or re-invent the wheel, or something to that effect. Every time I think I'm charting new waters, I pull a Columbus and discover "new lands" that are conveniently already populated.

Curious to see how the IX top quilt works for you. I had the understanding that the IX top quilts led to too much condensation and weren't viable. Really love my IX UQ, and would be interested to see if the reviews are changing.
