    bad hotknife for cutting foam

I got a styrofoam knife at Joanne fabrics. I guess that's a different breed of cat than I needed. It had a 5" 'blade' made of some kind of very light metal. While I was trying to cut the foam, it ended up bending, so that didn't work out at all.

Folding them in half and rolling sounds really good and is probably what I am going to do. Will it leave a permanent crease? Probably look like carrying a beer keg, but better that than a bongo drum.

I'll have to think a little more about Brandon's idea. If I was going to go that way, I think I'd probably try the Sgt Rock method (a wider piece of pad at the shoulders), but I'm still inclined towards the SPE idea.

I can't wait for the time I can use the 1/4" pad! It's only 8 oz! yay!

    Second Test of Pads

    Howdy,

Took a day trip out to the east rosebud region, some snow, expected temps in the mid 30s. I took only the 3/8" pad. Temperatures dropped quite a bit lower than expected the evening of the 14th, and we saw 24*. Ice in the water bag, cups and snow and ice on the tarps. Happily, the 3/8" pad performed well and provided me with plenty of warmth and insulation. I was using a 15* Eureka bag. Shoulder flaps were quite acceptable, although I could have used a little more width at the foot end. Just took a little squirming to get things aligned comfortably again, and that mostly occurred after the dreaded 3:30AM tinkle.

Just a quick update for anyone curious about the temp ranges possible for this.

I use a Wallyworld blue pad (24" wide and 72" long) in my BB and have used it once down to 18 degrees. My only complaint is the rolled up size for packing.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
