    Sleeping bag as UQ?

    Hi all,
I currently have a Hennessey Expedition Asym. I've only ever sleept in a sleeping bag with a Thermarest fer bottom insulation. I'd like to try an UQ/TQ combo, but I'm a little reluctantbto spend a ton of money on it. Have any of you tried hanging a sleeping bag under your hammock as a sort of diy UQ?

Yes. A lot of people have tried this, or any other quilt or blanket. I've used an army poncho liner successfully as an UQ on a HH.

Timber and I did this at the First Annual Florida Hang. Temps got down into the 20's and we were fine.

There are various ways to do this. Dejoha has produced fantastic directions for some different variants of the Poncho Liner UnderQuilt that he mentioned above.

I've also documented how I made 3 super easy UQs for my kids here:

For a HH you'll want to attach with shock cord to the whipped ends of your hammock, or make triangle adapters.
I've got a diagram of my UQ suspension about 1/2 way down this article:

Don't forget to post pictures of your creation when done.

Thanks for the input. I'll have to give it a try then. I might even run over to the surplus store for a poncho liner

I have done this. May have gone a little far in the time involved, but it works. I cut the zipper out of mine and sewed grosgrain in. Cut the hood off, (I used a mummy bag for mine). Put shockcord through the ends to tighten the ends. A few loops and shock cord to the hammock suspension.

Roadrunner, I have checked your original post several times for a full report on your mummy to UQ conversion. Pic looks good.

OP, I like RCress design as far as a sleeping bag to UQ conversion that does not ruin the sleeping bag. Something you can do while you mull over your UQ options.

I did something similar to RCress, but I did not sew on gross grain loops. I just made a larkshead loop and pulled the corners at the head and at the foot thru the loop. the other end of the line was attached to the same tree as the hammock.

rjcress: i had no idea that making a diy UQ could be this easy!! i will this method since you do not have to completely destroy the sleeping bag and you can still use the bag as a bag and not just and UQ.

This is simply perfect. I do have a rectangular old sleeping bag left over, and i do have all the small stuff that is needed as well. I'm gonna make this according to your instructions, and test it in 2 weeks time when i am going to hang again in the hills of Czech Republic !

    Thanks a lot !
