    Tyvek? Could it be done?

I was thinking of using some Tyvek home wrap to try to build my hammock. Also thinking of trying a cat tarp as well. This stuff comes in like 12' x 50' rolls. Has anyone ever thought of using it.

We use it as ground cloth under a tent, with no problems.

Made a rain suit out of some last year works great.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

It's cheap enough that it would be a good material to experiment with. I would test a Tyvek hammock carefully with lots of padding on the ground underneath me because Tyvek is meant to stick on the side of a building and not support the weight of a hiker hanging between 2 trees.

My main concern with tyvek would be any wear/crease points that will weaken over time. I also ask you to test over a padded floor/mattress.

    good luck,

I heard tell of a man in Texas who made a cowboy suit out of brand new Tyvek. They caught him hiking through Big Ben and arrested him.

Heh. Rustling.. you crack me up. Tyvek is nicer to work with once washed but, beware, it can shrink quite a bit. Mine shrunk way more than I expected it to based upon what I read in the articles.

I think Henry Shire's site says it can shrink up to 15%.

Yeah, the piece I was working with for a ground cloth shrank by at least 20%. This is when I decided to head to the trees.

Has the Tyveek hammock happened yet?

I was thinking about this today. I think it would make a good multiuse groundsheet/hammock. Or maybe I should stay with the groundsheet/sun tarp of tyvek.
Is that too much to ask? Girls with frikkin' lasers on their heads?

I have a huge roll of the stuff, I use it for everything. I haven't made a hammock out of it though, too crinkly . My neighbor is a heating and air man, he works a lot of new construction, and he finds rolls of it in the trash can on these job sites. I love it because he brings me the rolls. Its good to have friends that, even though they do not understand you, they still help you.
