    Cuben questions

Winter noodling going on here....though someone might know...

Cuben tarps...do they need to be cat cut? does it make the pitch different?

On the basis of having made one 9' x 11' tarp, I can offer a little info, but this is not authoritative. I chose not to use catenary cuts for either the ridgeline or the edges because I thought they wouldn't make as much difference for a material that doesn't stretch. I also knew that I could go back and add cat cuts to the edges pretty easily if I needed to. That's worked okay, so far, but I also can control edges that might flap in the wind with tie-outs. There are four tie-out points on each edge of the 11' sides, including the corners. I prefer using fewer tie-outs and stakes, so someday I may re-work this tarp.

The ridge seam is bonded with 1" adhesive transfer tape. It's a lot easier to make a seam this way if it is straight, not curved. The edges are folded 1/2" and taped. I believe it wouldn't be difficult to do them as cat cuts. If I change the shape of this tarp to fit a future hammock design I'll probably do cat cut edges to see how much difference it makes. A ridgeline cat cut is not only more difficult to make, it also makes getting the correct pitch angle important because there's no stretching to help compensate, as there would be with sil. Still, a CTF3 tarp with cat cuts everywhere would be more stable if pitched properly - and beautiful. It might be a bit less noisy, too, though I don't find my tarp any noisier than sil. It "softens" a bit with use, so it doesn't remain "crinkly".

CT1K.08, which is about 1/2 oz./ sq. yd.
have any concerns of durability gone away?
No, but testing is ongoing. CT2K.08 is another type often used for tarps. It is about .7 oz/sq. yd.
    color? like it?
    No, and yes.
    difficulty level to make?
Hardest part was finding the information needed to choose the right materials (You know about that.) Next hardest was finding sources for the materials (CTF3 - that's "cuben" -, adhesive transfer tape, primer). Next hardest was working out a procedure appropriate to my work space. Another toughie is rationalizing the expense, because until you know the answers to all the other questions, it's a leap of faith, which means you rationalize, then jump.
Once all that is done, the process is at least as easy as sewing, but different. My next CTF3 project will be easier.
