On my tarp, I sew two bars, and then to boxes with 1 X in each. The grosgain is the bread around the filling of the tarp and the reinforcement underneath.

1. Create a triangle patch from 1.1 sil-nylon. Hem exposed edges ½ inch fold once. Use a string 2.5mm stitch to hem.
2. Use a 4mm rolled hem with special presser foot. 2.5mm straight stitch. Feed raw edge of patch through.
3. Sew patch to the tarp with a 1.5mm long & wide zigzag stitch
4. Sew 1” grosgrain to the tarp top with a 1.5mm long & wide zigzag stitch parallel to the edge
5. Sew 3, 1.5mm long & wide zigzag stitch from the base of the hem out. One left one center and one right.

Result: I can lift 100 pounds (strap together two barbells) of weight. I tested this 5 times and observed no visible wear at all. This is the most elegant design I could come up with and it is amazingly simple to accomplish.

sooo ... perhaps a dumb question .... i'm doing this to my guide gear tarp ... should i use seam sealer on it??

In all my years of tarp building I have only seam sealed ridge lines and center fabric pull out patches. The edges... I never worried about....

that's kind of what i figured. thanks for the response. i finished adding the tie-outs about an hour ago. came out pretty well. thanks all for the info. stoked!

This is an awesome thread/experiment I dug up looking for tarp tie-out ideas! I love digging up these great nuggets of information.

I've already sewn my reinforcements on with straight stitches, and was going to just have my grosgrain tie-outs on the underside of the tarp...I'll now sandwich and use a zig-zag thread. Hopefully good for 50+ lbs even though I used straight stitching on the hem/reinforcement attachment.
