    1st. post

    quick shout to say hello.

i am using the hammock and tarp for the 1st time as i make my way north along the AT. i guess technically not a true thru hiker, as i'm spending 3-4 days on the trail then returning home for the weekends to regroup, catch up on work, laundry etc.....

i've found the hammock frees you up quite a bit as far as where you can settle in for the evening. 4 weeks into the trip and i've had some good nights with very deep sleep out on the trail. something i've never gotten from a thermarest and bag on the hard ground. good sleep is just as important as nutrition and hydration when you're out there hiking yourself into the ground day after day.

i also do a lot of kayak camping (well, maybe not as much this year with the white blazes on the trees hollerin' at me) and it will also open up a lot of areas to set up a shoreline campsite that aren't possible with a tent.
not to mention far less bulk in the boat.
that makes a huge difference when paddling in rougher waters.

right now i'm just tossing an old thermarest pad in it and sleeping in a 15 degree bag. slept out in below freezing temps, snow, and rain with no issues with being cold at all.

Surely, God could have made a better way to sleep.

    Welcome, JoeyB.
A newcomer to the site as well - don't even own a hammock yet.

    What hammock are you using?

Grand Trunk Skeeter Beeter pro w/ a simple eno tarp.
more than likely won't get too heavily involved with the latest tech. innovations etc...
i view it as just another tool for use out on the trail.
    keep it simple and cheap.
but as with everything else, when things wear out or break, upgrades are always worth the $$$.

browsing around here shows that this a far better place to stay up to date on gear, details etc... than most retail outfitters.

If you walk the entire Ap even with breaks, it still counts. Glad to have you here and welcome to HF!
