    Hanging in Iraq

Here is a pic of my WBBB and Flamethrower UQ in action at a Forward Operating Base near the border with Iran. We drive all over Southern Iraq, and often have to spend a night at one of our bases. We normally stay in the large tents used by the military, and those can get a bit uncomfortable and smelly!

The WBBB also doubles as a bug net when forced to sleep on cots, and keeps the sand fleas out.

Everyone who has seen my hammock is impressed by the current technology and comfort it can provide. I just wish I would have brought one over years ago.

In this photo I had to lash it to a blast wall and a pole that was part of a bunker. Trees are not easy to find in our area of operation...

    Cool setup and great picture!

When I was there in '04, I used to hang my cheap net hammock (one of those from the PX that they advertise as being about the size of a canteen) from a couple of date palms in the yard of the house my unit lived in. I never overnighted in it, though.

I remember seeing a guy hanging in a PX hammock near the hospital in the Green Zone -- one end tied to a tree, the other to a HMMWV. I sometimes wonder if that guy still hangs and is on HF.

    Chris,

I lived right next to the CSH in the IZ in 04 and remember the same guy. I think it was on the doctors. BTW, the IZ has been turned over to the Iraqis now. There is a documentary crew from HBO I think, that did a film called Baghdad ER around this time. I remember them up on the roof with the Docs who were smoking cigars and taking in the scenery.

There was a guy on the Embassy grounds that had a Hennessy hanging from the date trees. That was the first time I saw a "modern" style hammock and was hooked...

When I was in the military (2nd Ranger Bn) we were issued what was called a GP net (general purpose net). Though we used it mainly for camo or as a fish net, it was designed for use as a hammock as well. We did hang a few times in Panama, but a lot of guys fell out of them or ripped the netting with the buttons on our trousers.

It's a camouflage netting. Used to break up the outline of vehicles and so forth. In the desert, its best use is to provide some shade and still allow some wind to flow.
