1st Annual Oregon Hang: Planning

I say we start planning a big hang that will accomodate our friends in Cali and Washington as much as possible. A couple months from now would be good so that those people that live a ways away have a chance to take days off of work and plan as needed.

How about late May or early June? Memorial Day weekend (May 28th - 31st) might be a good time being a 3 day weekend and all. Maybe somewhere in the middle of the state, like the Bend area? We just need to decide if we want to hike or car camp and then we can figure out where we wanna go.

Please reply if you're in and what your opinions are on date and venue.

Early June would work for me, or late May. Need to paint the house as soon as the weather breaks, but that is only a week job. Bend would work for me. Sisters, Mt Bach area, any of it. 3 Sisters wilderness. I would prefer to walk in a way, at least a mile or 2 to eliminate the other car campers.

I'm in as well. The time frame is pretty open though I'd rather take an extra day off than go on a holiday weekend due to the droves of people that come out of the cracks on holidays. I put car camp, but I'd be up for a short hike. My feet will be in good shape by then(been a long recovery). I may bring my son along as well if he's ready to pack some of his own weight. I'll keep an eye on this to see what comes up!

I was just in Portland earlier today to visit my nephew for his 3rd B-day, but I'm up for another trip down. I don't know the areas all that well, but if a place is picked out, with good directions, I will more than likely be there. Just got my 3-Season incubator, so let's put it to good use.

Happy to pick people up on my way down too if needed.

How about the Obsidian Trail in the Three Sisters Wilderness? Permits needed, but i could take care of those if we get a date lined up.
From the trailhead to Obsidian falls is a great, easy, medium length hike.

Let's see a show of hands for the Obsidian trail. We need a date for the trip and the number of people (and animals) confirmed to be going in order to get the permit.

"Wilderness Permits:

Entry permits are required between the Friday of Memorial Day weekend and October 31 for all groups that enter all wildernesses in the Willamette and Deschutes National Forests. All wilderness permits are free of charge.
Limited Entry Area Permits

Limited Entry Area Permits are required for overnight and day visits to two areas:

* Obsidian area (Three Sisters Wilderness)
* Pamelia area (Mt. Jefferson Wilderness)

The special permits are ONLY issued at Detroit Ranger District (Willamette NF) for the Pamelia area; McKenzie Ranger District (Willamette NF) and Sisters Ranger District (Deschutes NF) for the Obsidian area.

Permits may be obtained by phone or in person within 30 days of your group's planned trip. When you inquire about a permit, please be prepared to supply the following information:

1. First, second and third choices (locations and dates)
2. Proposed arrival and departure date
3. Trailhead entry point and exit point
4. Number of people in your group (not more than 12)
5. Number of stock, if applicable (not more than 12)"
