Doesn't get that cold over here, -17C was the coldest I saw on my thermo this winter and -5C is the coldest I've been out hanging, so I don't know how it is when the ground is rock hard. But I just cut my own stakes from deadfall. Snap a branch, sharpen the point, and if I'll be using it for more than a day I'll notch the other end to help keep the cord on. Then I just stamp it into the ground and disgard it when I leave. If I'm going to carry a fixed blade with me might as well have it pull it's weight

I'm using the groundhogs too. I have bent far too many of the other "needle" variety of stakes. I bring one SMC snow stake which also serves as my cathole trowel.

I've bent groundhogs as well last June 2010. Rocky country out in the NY AT.

Do you want paper or plastic???

I use these grocery plastic bags in snow conditions. Filled & buried in snow. Have held as well as sticks buried crossways to line.

They are still about a month out from getting here but I have some new stakes on order that have the holding power of the GroundHogg style Y stake at a lower weight. They Are a very high quality V stake, 2 color and length options. Being a V they nest together and take up much less space. I am also looking at some heavy duty needle stakes to stock as well.

In the snow I use sticks. Usually able to find enough to set camp.

    Ground hogs too

I've gone through fifty different stake types/brands and the MSR Ground hogs have been what i've finally decided on.. they stick in anything, dont warp and the weight isn't really ever an issue.
