I just posted up a photo of using mine like a bivy here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...ad.php?t=49195
Ha, I assume the hand ax is to ward off those pesky ground critters at night.
This must be the one occasion where the pad excels over an UQ.
"Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws." -Plato
Or why it's wise to do a 1/2 UQ / 1/2 pad combo.
Flexibility of both setups, and the comfort of the UQ.
I have set up my DIY in the backyard as a tent but don't have any pictures. I've always been wary about the possible abrasion of the hammock bottom on the ground.
my claytor mosquito/jungle hammock is made for this.
Make sure you pitch over high water mark-I learnt this the hard way!
It helps to take a groundsheet to stop sand being picked up and deposited in the hammock-a few nights of rubbing sand into the fabric under bodyweight may weaken it.
Yet another reason to carry a bigger piece of tyvek ground sheet.
