WBBB - 1.0 DL - My first impression

My birthday was in late Feb, and my Mommy (ok, I'm 44...) gave me a check and said get yourself something nice. I got a WBBB 1.0 DL (i). (Thanks Mom!)

I normally DIY my stuff (I have 3 hammocks I've made), but thought it was time to get myself something nice... that didn't take me tons of time to make...

The BB showed up on Thursday, along with a set of toggles from my new friend Syb from the PIF thread. (Thanks Syb!)

It came in a nice double-ended stuff sack. I elected for the line and strap suspension. I already had some whoopies made from Smurf-me-Blue 7/64ths amsteel I got from Dutch the Marathon Man. so I pulled the amsteel line off the BB, and put my whoopies on. I ran out to the back yard, where I have Mule tape permanently wrapped around the support posts for my patio cover. I hung my new BB.

At first I was a little dismayed. All my DIY hammocks are HUGE in comparison to the BB. My (former) favorite is a 10' 1.1 SL made from fabric I got from BackwoodsDayDreamer. The BB really looked small in comparison. I'm basically 6' tall, and I was concerned that it wouldn't be comfortable, or have a lot of calf pressure.

I crawled in and was immediately amazed. My feet immediately found the footbox. Calf pressure was minimal, (If I pull one knee off to one side, it goes away). The 1.0 fabric had me concerned for a moment, but it held my 200# bulk without a groan, and is really comfortable. (I'll never sleep on 1.7 ripstop again.) Outside temps were 55, but I didn't notice for about 5 minutes as I closed my eyes... The shelf is perfectly placed, and easily accessed.

With the double-ended stuffsack, setup was quick and easy. When I put it away, I wrapped the end of the whoopie sling and the loop on my toggle around the cordlock for the foot-end. That way, I can grab the toggle and whoopie, pull them out and setup immediately.

All I have to say is: I thought I wanted a lefty, but this is quite comfortable as-is. I'm headed to the desert tomorrow, and I'll probably spend Saturday night out in the BB with my AHE Lost River UQ. For now, I'm really happy how this turned out.

Next purchase: a BBO from Paul at AHE...

    Thanks Brandon!

Excellent to hear about your new gear John. Glad the toggles arrived. But alas my friend... ye olde adage applies... pics, or it didn't happen! I too had those exact thoughts after trying on at a group hang:

But after lying in the WBBB for a few minutes, all those thoughts were replaced by the incredible comfort. Still saving for one of these. Best of luck with the new toy.

Congrats on the BB..........I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed mine. You can't go wrong with the BBO from Paul, it really keeps the heat in and is a great wind break when the wind is really howling!!!!!!!

Funny I got my new WBB(i) the same as you did, but I am new to this hammock thing and I had trouble with the hanging part. I mean I think I tightened the strap suspension to tight and I got very frustrated on trying to loose it. I finialy got it lose with a pry knife. When I got in after a few adjustments it was very nice. I took it down and restrung it up and still had a little trouble. Do you think I should go to the Dutch clips?? Sorry if I posted on you post but you had gotten the same as mine on the same day and I thought since it was fresh in your mine you could help.
    Thanks

...Are you using the straps/biner set up?
If yes, then yes, if you tighten too tight, it can be hard to loosen those buckles. If you replace the biner with dutch clips, it will do nothing to help the problem you have described.
    maybe some links for help..'

you shouldn't be pulling the webbing tight in the buckles, suspension should be at 30deg or so (loose), should have gotten directions on how to adjust and loosen the buckles, if not shoot me an email

Interesting post, John. I took my WBBB down to Salton Sea for a test on Friday night along with a new tent. The two trees I picked were seven perfect 30" paces apart. I did manage to get it hung properly although I believe it would have worked better with the trees a bit farther apart. I didn't put up the tarp or UQ as it got pretty windy - ended up taking it down & tenting for the night.

I'm thinking of going back down in the Spring to hang for the night in preparation for a trip to TN. Perhaps we can go together & discover how this is supposed to work.

Just got home from Ocotillo wells. It was way too windy for a night in the hammock stand, so the BB never got setup... But we did have a lot of fun in the desert, and none of the toys got broken. When I'm not so exhausted from unloading the RV and trailer, I'll set it up and take a nap...

How about an overnighter off Sunrise highway? I found a "backpacking" area that's 300 yds off the road... It'd be a good practice... also a lot closer and better weather than the desert in spring... Heck, anybody can join us...
