Are you making a UCR? There was no loop for a whoopie sling. Looks like you need a longer bury, 6 inches is too short I think. Try adding a few inches.
Don't let life get in the way of living.
yeah, interesting. i'll try to explain it but it's probably best if you watch the video. most people make their whoopie slings like this.
you have a piece that is 14-18' long
at one end, use about 6-8" to creat a loop that is secure with a locked bremmel.
from that locked bremmel loop go up the line some 18-20", this is the start of your burry.
from that starting point most people make their burry's 8-12"
the remaning amsteel will be feed down the burry and at the end of the remaining amsteel you'll back feed into itself to create a fat end which doesn't allow it to pull out through the burry.
where you messed up (sorry for being blunt) is you have the burry at the end of the piece that creates the loop. the burry that holds the loop should be on the piece comming off your hammock 18-20" away from the hammock body and not at the tip end.
another way to say it i guess, the burry should start 18-20" up the line from the lock bremmel and not and the very extreme end of the whoopie like you have it.

Hmmm, tried again without luck: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMmbpSHGWWo
Is 3/16" too big?
I think you are pulling on the tail. For the whoopie to work the load need to stretch the bury (making the bury ID smaller). This is how the friction is made. A bury length of 72 dia. is commonly used.
72 dia?? this is the first time i've see the number 72 used. just not sure what it's relevance is

That's not a whoopie sling, there is no loop. Looks more like a UCR.
So. The line you're pulling on the righthand side of the video (your left hand) seems to be the bury line (as opposed to the buried line). Experience with UCRs suggests that the tail end (the little short stubby one) needs to be pulled down somehow as well. Some folks use shock cord, I have used a connection to a prussik on the other line.
Success with UCRs requires that first you "milk" the bury before putting any tension on, and also pull on that tail.
Now if it really was a whoopie sling you want, you need to make a loop. Follow these instructions. Easy and the product really works.

Ah, true... I guess I was making a UCR
And for that, you will need a longer bury. Or...keep the end attached to the house lower than the end you are pulling on (as if it were attached to a hammock) and hang a little weight from the free end you showed lengthened at the beginning of your second video. That should help to keep the full length of the bury locked.
Now go ahead and try a whoopie sling. It will tension both ends of the outer part of the bury and "grab" very securely.
