I would not consider a Gorillapod a tripod. It is more like a trinket for P&S cameras which is fine if that is what is required. But if you truly need the versatility and stability of a tripod, nothing with beat a carbon fiber tripod. I do 4x5 and 8x10 film photography, so saving weight on a tripod is somewhat futile but everything helps.

For digital photography with an SLR type camera, a small CF tripod with a small ball head with quick release mechanism is a great option. I have researched all of the available CF tripods and decided on Feisol. I have 2 of them, probably much larger than you would need for digital, but they are very light, rock solid, and well built. I suggest this option:

Gorillapod comes in several weight classes. Only the smallest one is for P&S... Still, the fact that it only gets you ~10" off the ground makes it hard to justify over the much cheaper, simpler beanbag on a stump.

That looks like a nice tripod (I esp. like the ballast hook), but if my little aluminum tripod is overkill for backpacking, then that thing is triple overkill. 17lbs of support for ~3lbs of DSLR.

Too bad there are no truly lightweight CF tripods..

If you can only get 10" off the ground, I suppose you could improvise with a loaded stuff sack and save the weight of a Gorillapod altogether.

When I use a medium format camera when travelling and don't have room for a tripod, I use a monopod. I have a Feisol CF monopod that weighs ~1 pound and is excellent. It also works well enough as a hiking staff and could be put to use as a tarp pole.

Yeah. It's tempting. I've drooled over a few monopods, but usually I need a tripod for longer than 5 second exposures and macro work. Neither of these applications seems particularly well suited to a monopod. I have seen a few cool tripod setups that people have made with 3 trekking poles. The only extra weight in that case is the extra trekking pole and the head/bracket that holds them together. The poles I have now are fixed lenght ski-poles, though. So I'd want to buy some adjustable poles before attempting that. So far it's looking like the lightest option.

The title of the thread is "HDR" WB gear, or something like that. So tripods are not too off topic because you need a tripod to do HDR and someone asked that question.

No matter the title, camera gear is off-topic for this forum.

I did not write the title or post the thread. I am making legitimate posts that are in line with the content of the thread.

If you think this thread is off-topic, then why not move it to the off-topic forum?

There are several areas for off-topic discussion including the "Other Gear" forum. As a moderator, I assume that you could simply move the post to the forum you deemed appropriate.
