    Tauntline hitch

So what is wrong with the tauntline hitch? I would not want to use it on the hammock suspension but I use it all the time on tarp lines and guy lines. I see all the figure 9 and knot bones and the new flyz but the tauntline seems so much easier? What is wrong with it?

I've used it on Bass Pro $20 Hammocks suspension, help trying to convert grounders. Works alright to get em going.

Love the knot... the "hardware" solution is usually just faster/easier (also more costly and can be lost). Nothing wrong with going old school.

It's what I go back to every time if one of the niftier solutions causes trouble. Works well on almost any diameter line, too - even cheap 100 lb test spectra fishing line.

I still use it on my tarps even though I have various hardware. I like knots and a few selected ones are definitely something everyone should know.

Knots don't hold well on some ropes. It is difficult for them to get a byte into very hard slick ropes like spectre and dyneema. Figure 9's with a backing quick-release half-hitch work very well, though.

I love the tautline too. The only time I've found it causes issues is in using a tarp that hangs below the tarp ridgeline. Then the knot can get in the way of sliding the attachment points.

The fun thing about knots is that, like beer, but unlike wives, you can try out new knots without your favorite knot getting jealous!

Two alternative knots I like are the Powercinch and the Siberian hitch. Check out the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjMmla9DSzo
or at www.bushcraftnorthwest.com (under "how to set up a tarp"). They're fun to use, and my old standby tautline hitch has never made me sleep on the couch for trying them!

I've always used that knot on my tarps. Make it slippery with a loop and then it's golden.

Tautline is what I use to tie up my cataraft. Holds well, and easily adjustable. I use it on my tarp guylines also. But now I'm experimenting with tensioners, so I've been trying out the fancier gadgets.
