I also wore one many moons ago, very hot also. For the tarp, using netting and local vegitation is something I might mess with next time I'm out.

I agree with Smashdn on the site selection issue. Stealth camping is not all about your camo pattern, but in fact how and where you do it. Anyone can make a tarp using the uber-perfect camo pattern that will blend into the surroundings, but as soon as the season changes and with it the colors of the woods you will be exposed to the roving eye of others if you haven't done proper site selection in the first place.

The British DPM pattern is great for the "Boreal Forest", but if you take it to the desert or unwisely select a site that exposes you....your had!

And let's not forget the little saying that we may have read or heard somewhere pertaining to stealth camping..."Arrive late and leave early!"

Guys, I made a hex tarp from British DPM PU coated decent weight nylon last year. I'd be happy to sell it if anyone's interested. I guess $60 (shipped) would be about right.

One thing to note - when I did the seam sealing it was a cold day and the seam grip went white though performance is not affected. I don't know what weight it is but can weigh it if anyone's interested. pics and dimensions are here

    found a better choice...

There is an old school of "stealth" thought, that says to go with muted solids like the dark greens, and even tan or black. A point being is that one muted solid color will be more effective over a wider range of conditions, if concealed properly. That's certainly up for discussion.

The main bonus comes, when you are discovered, and it's going to happen, that if you aren't sporting a ton of camo, it appears a little less like your intent was to trespass or deceive.

It's like the guys in the Ghillie suits. Ask them what happens if you get caught in one.

This isn't about getting caught in one, I don't care, yea site selection is important, and a green mix in spring and fall isn't great. This was to invoke a discussion to get better camo when the field does not have a lot to choose from.

I will be honest, I don't care for shelters much and choice of tarp tops would defray the wear and tear and one would be a little larger for cooler temps. I am even thinking of making it piqued.
