Huh? Next step to hanging the hammock with the tree straps or next part of the hobby? I'm confused here! If you mean in the hobby, then probably a tarp or underquilt.

Some general things that should help shorten the learning curve:
    http://gear-report.com/hammock-campi...-illustration/
    http://gear-report.com/how-to-pitch-...-hammock-tarp/

Good instructions for making a whoopie sling:

What I've learned with whoopies is that 2 things make a huge difference in whether it is impossible or easy:
    1) Your fid... the thing that you use to pull the line back through itself has to be small enough diameter to fit easily through the line. I fold 2 wires that I pulled from an ethernet cable and twist so they hold the line. Others use things like safety wire and yarn needles.
    2) tapering the end of the line that you will pull back through itself. Described well in step A.1. of the directions.

    I hope this helps

Why not just buy the whoopie slings? There are several different vendors that sell them. Easy and done--don't have to worry about testing them to make sure you did them right. I had looked into gathering up materials to make my own stuff and I didn't find much of a savings after figuring in gas to go get it or shipping. Time is also a factor for me. I have what seems like a million quilting (regular ones not down quilts) and sewing projects sitting around my sewing room. I just couldn't see adding more to that and delaying my hanging adventures.

And, seriously, if you haven't yet, check out Shug's Essentials for Noobs (see the little clicky linky at the bottom of his post above and you'll go right to them!) and also check out some of Grizz's videos. I have learned much from these two
