    Makeshift Fid

Thought I would share some possibly useful information. I got my amsteel in the mail, and after trying to explain to my fiance why I was so excited about rope, I began the search for a fid to make some whoopie slings and whatnot. I didn't have any wire around the house that was thin enough, but I did come across some Curler pins. They are like bobby pins, but a little longer and without all the "bends" in it, so they are smoother.

I found these excellent as a fid. I slid the rounded end through the center of the rope and then put the end I wanted to pull through into the rounded eye and it worked like a charm.

So I learned how to make all kinds of awesome stuff with amsteel, and what a curler pin was. Solid day chock full of education.

Curler pins. Also available at any drug store for a couple dollars.

My wife: So how are your arts and crafts coming?
Me: Not arts and crafts. Cutting edge hammock suspension system.
My wife: Looks like sewing to me.
    Me: Cutting Edge Suspension System!

    LOL

Thanks for the suggestion for the fid.

My wife saw me smearing some vaseline on a cotton ball and asked what I was doing. I said "making tea with my stove"

    Finace comes into the basement.

"What are you down here tinkering on now?"

Me: "It's called a whoppie sling, look the rope comes through the middle like a chinese finger trap and you can hang the hammock up with it like this and it won't slip."

"It looks like a noose, don't hang yourself."

Me: "It's really cool, look how much lighter it is compared to this stuff (old suspension)"

"I'm going to take the dog out, rolls her eyes.."

    ...I love tinkering.

I used a ball point pen, scotch tape, and the straight section of clothes hanger with good results on Samson's AmSteel Blue 7/64ths"

So true, I got that as early as this morning when I was sitting on a conference call (I work from home) and was ripping the stitching out of the omnitape on my BMBH in preparation for sending it for the javaman mod at 2QZQ's shop.

Opens office door and whispers "tea is ready downst.......what are you doing NOW?"

Me:"Removing omnitape from my bridge hammock"

    "During a conference call?"

    Me: "sure, multitasking, you know"

Rolls eyes and starts to close the door: "you are such a geek, you know that, you and your hammock toys"

I later remind her that she makes custom HATS and then WEARS them in public. Despite my best retort, no points are scored. I'm still a hammock geek.

Wife: "When are you going to clean the basement up?"
    Me: "Why?"
Wife: "You have all three hammocks out, two tarps, 1" webbing, and carabiners...what are you doing?"
    Me: "Research"
Wife: Rolls her eyes and walks back upstairs muttering "Why did I marry a Wilson?"
Me: I yell, "Because I'm brilliant!" as my hammock sloooowly slides to the ground!

HF is more of a support group(excuse the bad suspension pun)than forum.

I need my daily assurances that it's not just me everyone is shaking their heads about.
